Maintaining the very high metabolism rate they have

November 28, 2006

You ever get a song in your head?  It happens all the time right?
Last night at around 12:30 am I couldn’t get They Might Be Giant’s Mammal out of my head.  I even got up at one point to locate the cassette tape i’ve kept since 1992 or so.

No luck. But I found a live version today. Anyhow, have a listen. The warm blood flows through the large four-chambered heart.

Finally saw Borat

November 27, 2006

I saw Borat on Saturday.

For all everyone is talking about it, it’s okay as far as the movie goes. Though after hearing people say it’s the funniest thing ever I couldn’t help but think it’s not that that funny.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s funny.  It’s more a case of overhype.

The best Borat related thing i encountered Saturday was an article by the Toronto Star’s film critic, Peter Howell who linked what he calls the “Borat phenomenum” with the recent racist rant of Michael Richards, the guy who played Kramer in Seinfeld. You can read it here.

NES Paul

November 24, 2006

First there was the guy who took one of those old waterproof Sony Sports Walkman(men?)s and turned it into an Ipod carrier.

Now there’s this guy who has taken an old 8-bit Nintendo and made it into a guitar. CAn you guess what the name is?

NES Paul…  Nice.

3 Canucks in the backfield.

The Toronto FC have signed Chris Pozniak, Adam Braz, and Marco Reda.

Braz played with the Montreal Impact. Both Pozniak and Reda most recently played in Europe, but also played professionally with the Toronto Lynx.

Or so I thought.

Marco Reda had this to say about coming to play in Toronto with the FC: “Having never experienced professional football in Toronto before, this is a really nice change for me.”

What?  Excuse me?

Never experienced professional football in Toronto? Was the Toronto Lynx a charity team you played for? Perhaps you weren’t paid Marco, but people paid to come and see the team play. And yes, by the way players were paid to play for the Lynx.

Maybe this quote is out of context – perhaps he meant to say he’s looking forward to playing for the MLS team in Toronto – but saying he’s never had a chance to play professionally in Toronto isn’t true.

Come on dude. I keep bringing it up, but you and Poz went abroad after that match between the Lynx and 1860 Munich. The Lynx won 1-0 in that game on a smallish field.

The german team’s crosses were sailing way over the area and Toronto played that game so tight it made Catenaccio look like it was a run and gun free for all. Even the strikers were pulling back at times… And i’d say the bulk of the work was won by the midfield of Brian Ashton (now retired), David DiPlacido, and (to my best recollection) Adrian Serioux. Yes the Lynx fans (myself included) were pumped that you guys won that day, but it was a tight match.

I can’t believe you said that you’ve never played professionally in Toronto when that was exactly one of the reasons you’re back here now playing on Toronto FC.

Unless Marco, you’re counting playing for the Lynx as playing professionally in North York, in which case most is forgiven.  We’ll see how good Europe has made you next year.

Giving

November 20, 2006

It’s not to often I get that tight chested, heart in throat feeling while seeing an ad.

But this was one that did it to me today. I won’t spoil the ending by telling you who it’s for. It’s great.

Who can it be now?

November 20, 2006

Toronto FC still have some players that they have signed, but haven’t told the world about them.

Okay, here is the best case scenario for the players that “have yet to be announced that they will be on Toronto FC next year.”

1. Greg Sutton – goalkeeper

2. Jason DeVos – defender, living legend

3. Iain Hume – great haircut, goalscorer

4. David DiPlacido – midfielder

Two of these four are plausible. Sutton is the national team keeper and a free-agent. To my knowledge DiPlacido is a free-agent since the Lynx decided to switch leagues.

Here’s who I actually think that the FC are going to announce they’ve signed:

1. Greg Sutton – goalkeeper

2. Patrice Bernier – midfielder

3. Marco Reda, defence, ex-toronto lynx, currently in europe.

4. Chris Pozniak – midfield, ex-toronto lynx, currently in europe.

Let’s see what happens.

Trading stuff

November 20, 2006

So we had Adrian Serioux on the Toronto FC for like 10 minutes…  In his place we’ve got a guy named Ronnie O’Brien.

Not seeing a whole lot of MLS games in my lifetime – and none of those games included O’Brien – i’m curious to see what he’s going to bring to the FC next year.

I’ll put my faith in Mo. He’s coached MLS and knows the league. I’ll wait and see, but i’m still excited to see what we have on the field next year.

Serioux was good with the Toronto Lynx, and while i would have loved to see him in the Toronto uniform, i understand you have to trade quality to get it back.

But, if past play is any indication of a player’s strength – Serioux was always a better player than Marco Reda or Chris Pozniak. While the two latter players went and played in Europe – really after the Lynx played a helluva match against Bayern 1860 Munich where Toronto won 1-0, Serioux for the most part was a better Lynx player than those guys.

This of course is the solitary voice coming from a fan who watched from the stands.
I know Toronto FC is going to announce their Canadian national signings in a little while, I just hope that if indeed we end up with Reda or Pozniak (or both) that we don’t think they’re going to bring salvation to the team. Serioux was better.

Expansion Draft

November 17, 2006

Good ol’ Mo took Adrian Serioux. (Sir-Rowe)

Adrian can throw the ball a kilometre from the sideline.

Here are the names of the other guys that Toronto FC took in today’s expansion draft:

1. Paulo Nagamura (Los Angeles Galaxy)
2. Danny O’Rourke (New York Red Bulls)
3. Jose Cancela (New England Revolution)
4. Adrian Serioux (Houston Dynamo)
5. Nate Jaqua (Chicago Fire)
6. Rod Dyachenko (D.C. United)
7. Jason Kreis (Real Salt Lake)
8. Tim Regan (Chivas USA)
9. Ritchie Kotschau (Columbus Crew)
10. Will Hesmer (Kansas City Wizards)

Here is the MLS story about the selections.

Of note, Jason Kreis is the all-time leading scorer in MLS history. Looking at his player bio from Real Salt Lake (as opposed to the Fake Salt Lake – yes, yes, it’s Ree-al – people relax, it’s a lame joke on a lame stolen borrowed name.) Kreis has scoreed 278 goals in 301 career MLS games.

I’ll be interested to find out more about the players we got in the next little while.

Well, we have eleven.

Now i’m just waiting for Mo to announce the signings of goalkeeper Greg Sutton and mid-fielder Patrice Bernier and we’ll have even more players…

Bed net

November 16, 2006

“Spread the net” goal is to raise funds and distribute bednets in Africa to stop death by malaria.

Bednets are a physical barrier to the mosquito, which carries malaria. In  Africa, malaria is the largest single cause of death of children under 5 years of age. Pregnant women are also especially vulnerable.

Every $10 that UNICEF raises purchases a bednet for a child in Africa.

Here is a link to their website. They’ve included a mailing address where you can mail a cheque.

MLS Expansion Draft List

November 15, 2006

The MLS released the expansion draft list that Toronto FC will be able to draw players from.

Looking it over I’m immediately drawn to two players.

1. Adrian Serioux – Houston Dynamo. This is a gimme. He’s Canadian, he can play mid-field and defence, and he’s good. Mo Johnston will pick this guy for sure. If he doesn’t, i’m going to be really surprised.

and

2. Cobi Jones. LA Galaxy Just for the “Holy Shit” factor. Yes, Cobi Jones is old, but he’s also one of the best american players in his generation. It’s not going to happen that Moe is going to draft Jones, but i’d love to see Cobi kicking it in an Toronto FC uniform.

Imagine Cobi in toronto. Showtime!

You can have a look a the players available here.
